How NOT to ask for a refund…

I really do believe ‘manners maketh the man’, so usually when I get approached for a refund on an item, or an exchange for something bought by mistake, so long as I’m asked nicely, I have always obliged.  Recently, I didn’t (a first time for me), and it was because of the way this person asked for the refund.  Here is the notecard she sent me, and a classic example of how NOT to ask for a refund:

“I’ll make this brief & quicky..I was buying the demo skins..To try on & see if I like any of them..As I was doing so..I accidently bought the fatpack!!!!!!

Here’s the date: Sat Jul 10 04:16:19 2010…As for the transaction number..I don’t have a clue…I would like a refund back AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! ..I don’t think that’s too much to ask for please!!!

B.S. If I seem panicy or angry…It’s because i am…So, if you would so kindly as to get your sl butt into sl and give me my money back please!!!

I hope this is direct & crystal clear as for you…I’m usually a nice person in sl…Just not right now…Don’t dilly-dally or keep me waiting..I’m not a patient sl woman..Ms. AtomicBambi.
I’ll be IM’ing you as well…So, you’ll get the notecard from me.”

I think she meant P.S. instead of B.S., but BS is exactly what I was thinking!  Lol.   Well it got better…

Here are my Top 3 tips for How to Ask  for a Refund:

1.  BE NICE! Ask nicely, and you might just get somewhere.

2. Always have your transaction number.  If you want me to pay you for your own stupidity, then the least you can do is dig out your transaction number.

3. Don’t be rude or threatening to someone you are asking money from – duh.

  • If you have to say “I am usually a nice person…” when you are doing something, you are not a nice person in the moment and you know it.

  • I don’t generally comment on blog posts these days but saw this and felt the need to say something. You have always had great customer service when I and others have dealt with you. You have a lovely sim and your items are always full of creativity and a sense of uniqueness, something that I totally appreciate. Don’t let one rude person get you down. Now kindly get your SL butt into SL and make some awesome stuff! xD

  • lol – I thought it was sheer comedy value and am still chuckling (partly in disbelief). I have a two year old daughter, and even SHE knows that playing nice, more often than not, gets you what you want :-)

  • I still giggle over that letter, but it’s what happens when you own a store.. or just work for one as my RL experiences go.. Perhaps they should learn the phrase “Kill ‘em with kindness” and take it to heart. Not only is that good on the retailer’s end, but it’s something a customer should remember when filing complaints. More likely to help someone if they aren’t having an episode.

  • i want to say that i am shocked by this because a part of me is, i would never talk to anyone this way in SL or RL period, but i work in RL customer service and this kind of attitude is present a lot especially when it is the customers own fault for the mistake.

    it’s beyond me though how people can think that this is ok behavior

  • What a poop. Your skins & everything else are lovely, and I’m glad you can laugh even though this person is really, really gross. If she’s trying to scam people like this she’s not quite skilled at it, and if it was legit, yeah- if you’re old enough to use SL, you’re old enough to be polite and include pertinent information.

  • So…being nice…when asking for a refund…may increase your chances for a refund?! WOW! :-P I can’t believe this chick actually had the gall to send that notecard to you. It was her own damn fault (we’ve all accidentally bought an item when we just wanted to demo). You live, you learn, you move on…you don’t threaten the creator.

    Anyway, I don’t blame you for denying her request for a refund. Serves her rude SL butt right.

I know people are ballsy in SL because they have their little computer screens to hide behind, but that is just a new level of douchery. You should post this idiots name so other store owners can be sure to ban her.

  • I don’t know how all you big stores deal with people like this. I’d be so stressed from all the rude people, scammers, etc.

  • You know, I’m patient with people. I know that things happen in SL beyond our own control and I get it.

    Buying demos and then accidentally purchasing a fatpack? OK, understandable. But, you don’t honestly expect me to give you a refund for something non-transferable, do you?

    I’ll admit – I’ve done it once. I refunded a customer for a non-transferable product one time and I wasn’t thrilled with it, but the customer was nice and genuinely sincere.

    Now, had it been me in your position, the conversation would have been a bit different. After threatening me, I’d have given her a reason to report me. That’s just the short version, but God help you if you catch me on a bad day with that kind of crap. I can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Which do you prefer?
