So today I applied to a club as a dancer – as you may well know, being an SL fashion/hair/skin addict can add up, so I was looking for some change on the side. The club, Ambrosia, doesn’t really play the music I like (a LOT of Nickelback and whatever new crap is on the radio) and it’s gesture city, but it has its pluses too. I sent in my application, and about 10 minutes later got messaged from the owner.

Wow, what a professional and charming guy right off the bat! His short answers and lack of greeting put me off, but I soldiered on (that new Pink Fuel skin is haunting me…) So I got on voice, and confirmed I was female. He asked about a gig I’m VERY proud to host, a burlesque show. It’s not a club, but a twice-a-week 90 minute show. He said I’d have to quit if I wanted to join Ambrosia- that ain’t happening, so I apologized… and he hung up on me. A minute later…

Woot! I had already deleted Ambrosia from my landmarks and had no desire to return, but hey. I’m not sure what an “ashole” is but I doubt it’s a compliment.
I really did think a show was different from a club, and the time I could have given Ambrosia NOT filled with my hosting job would have been substantial. Instead, he lost what would have been a great employee and got Ruthed. Now, maybe you think I’m in the wrong with assuming my current job didn’t count- and that’s fine. With that in mind- was THIS the way to respond to it? His application makes a big deal out of typing well- when his own comes off poorly and lacks any personality. He could have easily said “Well I do count that as a club, but thanks for your time.” Then I probably would have returned to the club to tip away, and not have left with a bad taste in my mouth. Nice work!
I have to wonder if he’s like this in his RL business, if he has one (on the phone he sounded just as abrasive and off-putting.) Does he think it doesn’t matter in SL? Maybe it doesn’t, but people do talk. Online or off, we like to be treated with respect when we extend it, and a bad reputation ain’t good in any medium.

Who is he to decide his staff can’t work for somebody else? in rl you can work for more then 1 company, so here too…
I worked in the strip clubs back in 07 and it was not uncommon for them to require that you worked esclusivly for them as a “dancer”. But I never had an issue with my involvement with other types of clubs such as electronic clubs for example. They just cared about their “competition”. This other club you worked for sounds completely different from this genre so obviously he is just an asshole LOL.

Wow, what a weirdo. Not that I ever go clubbing or anything, but if anyone tries to invite me to that place, I’m taking a pass. :-/ I’m sure you’ll find a good SL job, Lila. I used to work for a few clubs a while back and had a great time and met lots of nice people.
Charlice, from all the girls I’ve talked to in that sort of business, it varies wildly. Different clubs have wildly different rules and rates, and generally you make your money off of tips more than salary, so the successful ones are very good at building up a loyal client base. Even so, some weeks are better than others because you’re relying more on tips, and it depends on who is free to show up. There’s a lot more to it than “just” dancing to be successful, and some clubs do better than others, both due to clients and the deals made with the owner of the club.
(I’ve never been a dancer, but I’ve known a few, and I’ve heard some real horror stories. Read the fine print before you work for a place!)

@ Chalice Carling: I’ve worked in a few clubs as a dancer or/and Escort. I managed and owned one before and all i can tell u is that it only depends on you how much money u make. Doesn’t really matter what club it is, its you and your personality. The more u “care” for the guys the more money u make :)

I have worked for Phil for 3 1/2 years. Phil is good to all the staff that pass the entry test. Phil has run Ambrosia continuously for four years and it is one of the most successful clubs in SL. It takes some very direct communications to run a club in SL or you can get bogged down in crazy stuff too quickly. Phil is a lot of fun, as all his staff and the Ambrosia regulars know.

I think the issue in this circumstance is based on the rude and unprofessional demeanor. She obviously didn’t do anything to deserve that kind of abrasive attitude. Even if she had said something that was inappropriate, a professional employer will not react in that way. I have had a similar experience with a club owner and I will never forget the behavior of the individual.
That is Phil’s personality, cold and honest. The club has a good atmosphere, and avoids most problems that other places have. Yes a RL business can fire you for not working exclusively for them, just as much as you can be sued for telling trade secrets etc. The boss in Rl is the same as the boss in SL, ownership can and will do as it see’s fit. The fact hat Ambrosia has been there for 3 1/2 years and on scale with the likes of Frank’s which runs the same way btw, means Phil has obviously done something well.
Look at the traffic numbers, rule out the nude beachs, 2 ballrooms (tight rules also), and furrie joints, and you will see that Ambrosia is one of the top places in SL, something must be going well.
And I will agree with Sylwia, your personality matters more then any specific place, large numbers don’t always translate, anyone can DJ or copy/paste to dance, it’s originality and personality that put the best on the top.
I disagree. Not everyone can dj. Ive been to some places where the dj’s were awful and clueless. And face it, if the music is bad and your dj is stuttering, it throws the whole mood of the club off and the dancers arent going to make crap. I can see sitting on my ass and flirting for money SO much harder. ~rolls eyes~
That was the issue, Arianna. I love that people are coming vouching for him- wow, his club is successful and he’s nice to you- so he’s allowed to act like this? None of you said anything about his behavior, you’re basically giving excuses for him being a jerk. I know people who are wildly successful, busy and “no nonsense” in real life that would never dream of acting in such a lame and immature manner.

Ambrosia first and now another one EQUALLY successful. Both clubs have websites and he DOES have the potential to slam YOU on two websites, which by the way are viewed by thousands!! The questions is…. “Does he”? Ummmm no. And Why?? Because he is a decent man, he is fair, honest and very business oriented. There are rules wherever you go and if you had READ the rules prior to the interview you would have gotten THAT straightened out right off the bat!!

I have known Phil Kearny for longer than I would like to. My wife and I both worked for him and I can easily say he is the lowest form of “human” that I have ever met. He treats his employees like garbage. When my wife left 4 or 5 people left with her because he is such an idiot.

I’ve worked at Ambrosia off n on for Phil Kearny for about 2yrs. Yes he can be a good guy BUT he can also be a *** as well. I can say that cause I have seen both sides of the guy. So pretty much in saying “if you kiss his *** then you will be on his good side if you chose not to then you get banned from the region like I did”. lmao Which is fine with me but at the sametime it makes me wonder that if he doesnt want me there then why dont he take down the pics he has of me in his club…lool
To be honest this is only the start of how rude that individual is. If his patrons realised how terrible he treated staff and select individuals the place would be empty. This is only a small moment in a long standing term of rude and unprofessional behaviour and harassment from this particular club owner. A long history of banning people “just because”.
I know several people who have worked for Phil in the past and I have also applied for a job there myself to face a similar barrage of insults from Phil.
He remains one of the biggest tools in SL today.
He has no respect for his patrons, his staff or any other person in SL.
God only knows why people go to his clubs.

Phil has a club, that has a good reputation, actually terrific reputation and keeps pigs like you out of the club. I am sure, when you were all associated with Ambrosia, the lindens you earned made you smile.

I commend Phil for truly running a terrific club. It’s because of his standards, that my girlfriend and I can have a great time and not have to deal with a barrage of screen spam and cheap and nasty chat. It’s the people sending in the comments above that we as patrons don’t want Ambrosia. Keep up the good job, not just to Phil, but the whole Ambrosia crew!

I would like to state that I have NOTHING against the talented people that work there- they have been nothing but fabulous every time I had been there, which is why this bums me out. Basically- yeah, he’s allowed to act how he wants, and I’m allowed to defend myself and talk about it. Agree, disagree- I shared what happened to me, the end.
Thanks to all the wonderful people (including insanely talented designers/club owners) that contacted me with support in-world, and I’m really sorry about those who had been mistreated. In Reply to TerryG (the Perv to the extreme) and his wife who is collared so must do what he says and post here….( at least she was civil to some extent) I am in full agreement with Delicious when I say that Phil works extremely hard as do his employees to keep trash out of Ambrosia. This is to ensure the integrity and protect the Ambrosia Brand.
He does NOT treat his staff like trash. He treats them with the utmost respect. He is fair, an excellent problem solver, an all around business savvy man who owns TWO successful nightclubs in SL.

I’ve been there a few times, to the club, and I have to say that Phil was the one making me puke on the club and never enter it again. I don’t think it’s necessary to tell in detail but yes, he acted like an asshole and I hate to lick someone’s ass.

I read this posting and thought wow I’ve had job interviews where when I went to the job I knew what the place was like did my homework.Knew what the requirements were again did my homework. The basic interview was very quick one to 4 word statements.I don’t personally think Mr Kearny act any way out of line until he counter reacted to his personal relations. I think it highly unfair for people to use this formate to attack the person.Lets face this is a place that has rules and goals like in any other place in life.The club is his business and his right to run according to his goals and btw it’s a good club !.
